Just about everyone will agree that the internet offers users a certain degree of anonymity. There will always be debates about whether that’s a good thing or not, but it’s the reality of the web. For the most part, people can’t see us if we don’t want them to, and people can’t get to know us if we don’t want them to.
As a blogger, you may have asked yourself just how personal you want to get when it comes to your blog. Do you want people to know a little or a lot about you? Do you want to disclose personal information to the readers who visit your blog?
All of these questions are important to ask if you are a blog owner; in determining just how personal you want to get on your blog, consider two critical points.
What is the purpose of your blog?
Think about your current blog or the one you are hoping to start. Is it for personal or business use? If you are using a blog for personal use, then you can go into detail about who you are, your likes, dislikes, opinions, thoughts, etc. and have a lot of fun, but if you operate a business blog, you might like to take a somewhat different approach.
With a business blog, your objective is quite clear: you want to build your business and attract new clients through that blog site. On a business blog, you want to publish articles that are useful to your readers. You want to establish yourself as an expert in your field, so people can get to know you and develop trust in you. This makes it so much easier for them to do business for you when they are ready. You’ll definitely want to reveal a little personality even in a business blog (after all, your readers want to get to know you!) but they won’t necessarily want to know what your favorite soda is or how many times a day you like to take a bath.
What do you feel comfortable with?
This is a really important consideration and you need to give it some thought when you are thinking about starting your own blog site or even if you’re currently operating one. How you feel is of great importance. The internet might offer you a degree of anonymity, but you are still revealing information about yourself to faceless people you don’t know—the majority of whom you won’t ever meet. That’s why it’s important to decide what is best for you.
What are you comfortable talking about online on your blog? Set boundaries for yourself, so you know what you will and will not talk about. If you are not comfortable talking about certain things on your blog, don’t talk about them. Set limits and work within them at all times.
Remember your readers as well and respect them. It’s never a good idea to offend or insult your readers. You’ll certainly enjoy your blogging experience more with a few boundaries, and you won’t experience that horrible feeling that comes when you casually say things online that are too personal for you or offend your readers.
By defining the purpose of your blog and deciding on what you’re most comfortable with, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll enjoy your blogging experience and get what you want out of it. Think of your values and your readers at all times and your blogging experience will be positive!
I couldn’t agree more…when beginning a blog you need to be as clear as possible about your intentions. Taking the time to do so will help you go a long way in being successful.
I totally agree that have to focus on the aims of your blog to decide how personal it should be. I’ve blogged on this topic with regard to business blogs:
