Blogging 101: a quick summary for new bloggers

Let’s look at some simple basic questions new bloggers or wannabe-bloggers often have.

Why blog?

If you have time on your hands and you like to write, blogging might be for you. If you really have something to say, you should consider starting a blog. Just about anyone with daily time to devote, a sense of humor, and a message can blog. Besides, it’s fun.

How to break in to blogging

One way to get your feet wet in the ocean of blogging is to comment on other blogs. Find one that you like and start interacting with it. Get advice from an experienced blogger. Figure out what you are interested in talking about. If you can find a niche that competitors are missing, fill in the gap with your own expertise. Don’t over-think it, though; the best way to learn what works and doesn’t work is by doing it, so it’s worth it just to start. Tomorrow I’ll mention some options for starting your blog.

How to expand

In order to have a successful blog, you need readers. Research what is popular now, what will be popular later, and what is fading out. The “how to” article is always in, specially if you have tips on something unique. Make sure your content is up to date and unique.

Build relationships with other bloggers. You’ll learn things you’d miss otherwise, and over time, you’ll be able to help each other. When other bloggers link to your blog and you link to their blogs, it will increase the traffic on both blogs. People love being able to find lots of resources on one page. Interact with the comments on your blog. The personal connection brings people back.

What to avoid

Reading can be fun but it can also be a bore. To keep the readers coming, avoid these simple things:

  • Long sentences. People like to read quickly. Long sentences are generally a turn off. Keep it short.
  • One long mass of words. If you don’t break into paragraphs, your blog will look intimidating. No one wants to feel that they have to really read the whole thing to get the info they want.
  • Long blogs without subheadings. If you have a fantastic “how to”-type post, use subheadings. Organize your facts into categories. That way people can scroll to find what they are looking for. It may also encourage them to read the whole thing.

Most importantly, be yourself and be consistent. That the perfect formula for successful blogging.

I would go a step further and say that if you have a business - you should be blogging. Get in at whatever level you can. Learn at whatever pace you can. But start. And take on more as you can.
